SUB-AREA OF INTEREST 3B: Electrodes - Quantification and Understanding of
Cr
Poisoning of Cathode Activity.

Financial assistance applications are sought for research to elucidate and
quantify the effect of Cr-related electrochemical degradation of SOFC
material
systems with particular emphasis on the cathode/interconnect system. It
has
been observed that under certain conditions (650 C - 1000 C) exposure to
volatile Cr species has been shown to degrade the performance of the SOFC
cell. This topic solicits proposals for research to elucidate and quantify
the
effect of Cr-related electrochemical degradation at the cathode/electrolyte

interface. Quantitative exposure response information is sought to enable
estimates of long-term cathode performance in Cr-containing environments.
The
goal is to allow designers of stack configurations to determine the
allowable
level of Cr in various materials and the level of Cr transport mitigation
required. Understanding of the Cr poisoning mechanisms is also sought and
may
lead to strategies to enable cathodes to become more Cr
tolerant.
